I hope that when Apple redesigns its keyboard once again, it will include user repair as a design priority. According to a post they made back in October, Reddit user spgremlin brought recently their 2016 MacBook Pro in for service for the third time.Under the Apple keyboard replacement, the user’s first two repairs were completely free. But they’re also prone to reliability problems. That includes the newest MacBook Pro with an 8-core processor, which uses an altered 3rd-gen Butterfly keyboard. Apple’s butterfly keyboards make for an exceptionally thin laptop. Keyboards are touched by human fingers all the time. Now, Apple will repair all generations of the keyboard. Still, this is a frustrating problem because a keyboard is the kind of physical interface that you would think requires just a small fix. I certainly don't have the expertise to fix most problems with Apple products, and I like how thin my new MacBook Pro is. There is a new addition to the underside of each key in the form of a thin silicone membrane designed to protect the butterfly mechanism from getting dust and crumbs caught in it. So now, according to Apple, my only option is to visit an Apple store or authorized service provider, which, as The Outline reported, could decide the fix is to charge me hundreds of dollars and replace the computer's entire "top case." Or, I could keep mashing the space bar and hope the problem works itself out, saving myself money, time, and the possibility that I have to send my expensive laptop away for service.Īpple's designs can be beautiful, and its network of stores makes getting quality service for a computer easy. Infamous tear-down-and-repair site iFixIt performed surgery on the new 2018 model MacBook Pro with Touch Bar and discovered something Apple doesnt seem to want to admit to.
